Broken capillaries, more commonly known as Spider veins, are those small, thread-like blood vessels found most commonly around the nostrils. Using the Candela Laser Gentle YAG, the team at Eden Laser Clinics is able to reduce the appearance of veins and general redness with little to no downtime.
Whilst we call them broken, they aren’t per se. They develop when the walls of the blood vessels that lie very close to the surface of the skin begin to weaken and expand, making them more visible.
They are generally caused by environmental trauma such as sun damage, rubbing of the skin, extreme temperatures and harsh skin care. Combining this trauma with a predisposition towards them forming, thanks to genetics, pregnancy or rosacea, they can be a frustrating skin concern.
The Spider Vein treatment at Eden Laser Clinics is a comfortable treatment that works to increase the production of collagen while also helping your vascular lesions to naturally disappear. The light produced by the laser produces heat which is then absorbed by the vessel to seal the vein whilst leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Once this vessel has collapsed, the body treats it as useless and removes it via the lymphatic system.
These veins are the smallest, finest blood vessels in our entire body which are responsible for microcirculation to deliver blood and oxygen to our skin’s surface.
What does the Spider Vein treatment feel like?
Most Eden Laser Clinics clients have described their Spider Vein treatment as feeling like a burst of mild heat with the dull sensation of being flicked with a rubber band. Because the laser wavelength and the treatment itself is extremely fast, just 5 to 15 minutes, it is bearable.
Can I use a topical anaesthetic cream to help with discomfort?
No. Topical anaesthetic creams work as vasoconstrictors, meaning they cause veins to close. During your Spider Vein treatment, we require your veins to be dilated as to best absorb the heat to then be destroyed.
How many treatments will I need?
Some patients will see clearance of small facial veins within one Spider Vein treatment, and some even instantly. With larger veins, you may require up to 3 treatments, spaced 6 weeks apart. During your consultation at Eden Laser Clinics, your laser therapist will discuss this with you to develop a custom treatment plan.
Is there any downtime?
You should expect that the treated area may be red and swollen for the following 24 hours, but that usually settles quite quickly. You will also be able to apply make-up shortly after your treatment. After a Spider Vein treatment, most patients are able to immediately resume most of their daily activities as this is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment. We do recommend not engaging in strenuous exercise for up to a week post-treatment.
What should I do after my treatment?
We highly recommend Eden’s Soothing Gel for the first three days after your treatment. During your consultation, your laser therapist will also provide you with a post-treatment skin care regime recommendations, including using a strong SPF, Aspect Dr Multi B and Active C to assist the healing processes of the capillaries and skin. Multi B works in a way that will help with blood flow through the skin and the Active C will assist to strengthen the vascular walls.
How are laser treatments different to Sclerotherapy for veins?
Sclerotherapy treatments are another alternative to laser when treating spider veins on the body. These micro-injections involve injecting a medication into the unwanted vein to act on the inner-lining of the vein. This medication causes the veins to collapse and shrink so it no longer functions. Within a few weeks the unused vein is absorbed by the body and it is no longer visible on the skin’s surface.
For tiny Spider Veins on the face and nose, even the tiniest of needles are often still too large. This is where laser treatments work best. And for those who don’t like needles, Laser Spider Vein treatments are the preferred option.
For those looking for a low- or no-downtime treatment, laser treatments will often be better suited. After the injections, your post-treatment guidelines may often require that you utilise compression stockings, and you could require up to 4 treatments to achieve desired results. For patients with large, rope-like veins on the legs, laser treatments are often not the solution.
