WHAT IS PICOWAY?
PicoWay® by Candela® is the world’s leading picosecond laser technology. Skin clinics in Sydney and around the world love using PicoWay because it has a global reputation for effectively treating a range of skin conditions – delivering faster results in less time, with reduced discomfort.

PicoWay is approved by the FDA, and offers a non-invasive and non-surgical solution to various skin problems.
If you’re looking for a safe, efficient way to treat problem areas on your skin – from wrinkles to unwanted tattoos – we invite you to book a free consultation with our clinicians. Discover how the PicoWay can help you!
HOW DOES THE PICOWAY LASER WORK?
The PicoWay laser system works by delivering short, high-peak power & tri-wavelength laser to the target skin area. During tattoo removal treatments, this action reduces the tattoo pigment into very small elements, which the body can easily remove.
Unlike its competition, the PicoWay is more powerful, faster, more efficient and results in less recovery time for patients.
The PicoWay handpieces can be either full beam or split beam. The handsets target pigmentation of the skin, shattering it into miniscule particles, effectively rendering them not visible through the skin.
ADDRESSES PROBLEM AREAS QUICKLY
In most cases, your PicoWay treatment will be completed in 30 minutes in less. Depending on the treatment, you could even schedule an appointment with us during your lunch break, and get right back to work afterwards!
Thanks to the power of the technology, you’ll also need fewer visits with PicoWay than with other laser products. This means you’ll see visible improvements to your problem areas in less time.
When it comes to tattoo removal, the time required to clear the affected skin area will depend on many factors – including the size of the tattoo and the colour(s) used in the tattoo. Typically, the PicoWay laser can remove tattoos in about half the time of PicoSure…for roughly the same price.
LESS DISCOMFORT
For many PicoWay treatments, our clients express experiencing minimal or zero discomfort. This is due to the heat being transferred to your skin during the treatment.
The exception to this would be laser tattoo removal, which is understanding given the nature of the treatment being performed! While our clients report higher discomfort with tattoo removal over other treatments, they advise it does hurt less than the process of getting the tattoo in the first place.

Is PicoWay laser painful?
It depends on the treatment. For acne scar removal, clients express mild or even no discomfort at all.
For laser tattoo removal, most clients tell us the feeling of the laser is similar to an electric shock, a flick from a rubber band, or a tiny pin prick.
The PicoWay is known for causing less discomfort to patients than competing devices.
Speak to our highly trained clinicians in advance, if you have concerns around feeling uncomfortable or in pain during your treatment, and they’ll work with you to find the best options for you.
Is PicoWay the best laser?
According to any study we’ve seen, hands down – yes! When compared with the Q-Switched or PicoSure alternatives, the PicoWay comes out on top:
- Number of wavelengths: PicoWay boasts tri-wavelength vs PicoSure’s single wavelength
- Pulse duration: PicoWay enjoys duration of 450ps / 375ps vs PicoSure’s 750ps / 550ps
- Peak power: PicoWay can demonstrate 0.9GW vs PicoSure’s 0.36GW (more power = more dramatic results)
We have also seen & heard reports of PicoSure-based treatments resulting in scarring, blistering, bleeding, or no visible difference between pre & post treatment. There was also a class action against a PicoSure company (Cynosure) in 2015, with allegations that the device did not remove or fade tattoos.
For all these reasons, Eden Laser Clinics opted for PicoWay vs PicoSure when determining which laser devices to invest in for our clients.
Is PicoWay laser safe?
Some minor side-effects (welling, redness or light bruising etc) are expected as part of your treatment with PicoWay, however these are normally cleared within 48 hours – and our patients typically see no or minimal downtime. These side-effects will vary based on the treatment you’ve received, however your skin consultant will talk you through the entire process in advance, so you are prepared and know what to expect.
How much does PicoWay cost?
PicoWay prices will vary depending on the treatment – check out our PicoWay pricing tab on this page for more details.
PicoWay vs PicoSure – what’s the difference?

Who makes PicoWay?
PicoWay was created by Candela – an American-based global medical device company, which has been in business since 1970.
When did PicoWay come out?
The first PicoWay device was launched in 2015, originally with a 2-wavelength laser platform. The device was updated in 2016 with a 3rd wavelength.

Can PicoWay remove melasma?
Most certainly, yes – it can! You can visit our melasma treatment page to learn more.
How long does it take for PicoWay laser to work?
The amount of time before you’ll see results, will vary based on the treatment being received. In some cases, results will be evident after the first session. However, multiple sessions are typically required before significant differences are observed. According to Syneron-Candela themselves:
“…a clinical study of benign pigmented lesions found that after 2 treatments, 87% of lesions had a least good response (>50% had a good response or better)“
What should I expect with the PicoWay laser?
At Eden Laser Clinics, we know it can be daunting to consider any kind of laser treatment for your body. That’s why our team will help you each step of the way – from your first discussion through to post-treatment care – to ensure you’re comfortable and confident with your treatment.
When you’re in the clinic, you’ll be supplied with eye protection to prevent damage from the powerful laser. Your level of comfort during the treatment will vary depending on many factors, including:
- The condition you’re being treated for
- The severity of the condition
- Location of the condition / skin area being treated
Most of our clients describe the feel of the laser on their skin, as being similar to being flicked by a rubber band, or a pin prick. If you’re particularly concerned about pain or discomfort prior to your treatment, raise this with your clinician during your consultation to discover what additional steps can be taken.

In the majority of cases, our clients are fine to return to work shortly after their treatments – minimal to zero downtime.
